Many enterprises fails the ERP implementation projects. The reasons include :
- Lack of preparation - before selecting ERP system, you must have a clear picture of what you want. This include "reason" of looking for ERP system, "budget" & "time", "resources"
- Lack of ERP or system knowledge - not able to identify the right ERP vendor during pre-sales cycle
- Lack of management support - no / wrong resource has been allocate to coordinate the ERP project
To make make sure your ERP project can be kicked off successfully, here are some tips :
1. Good Preparation- the reason of implementing an ERP system must related to your business goals (e.g cost effectiveness, better control, information stability...)
- budget should be tight up with your RIO (Returns on Investment)
- internal workflow should be identified and clarified beforehand
- search ERP vendor on web using key word e.g. ERP Hong Kong
2. Identify the right ERP vendor
- if you have low budget, off-the-shelf package is the best choice. You may find it from the web or from local computer shop
- for SMEs that believes information is their valuable asset, they should target those ERP vendors who are able to offer after sales implementation service
contact ERP vendor for free information or system demonstration. Must compare few vendors of the similar grade - when comparing ERP vendors, choose the reputable one. Any promise must be black and white in order to avoid over promise. Beside clarify the systgem features and workflow, find out their implementation methodology
- ERP vendor should have plan for continuous upgrade. Periodic upgrade is very import for few reasons : a) cross Windows platform compatibility; b) ERP system and new hardware compatibility; c) bug fixing; d) new features and reports will promote business efficiency
- asking for client reference, especially those falling the same industry
visit vendor's office. Trust your eyes, not your ears !
3. Management Support
- management support is critical to project success
- internal project team should be form with Project Manager, Project Coordinator, System Administrator, Representative of departments. For some SME company, one person may carry couple roles. As long as someone is responsible, the project should be able to kick off in a more efficient way
- management should annouce the project mission with deadline to the whole company, allocate resources to support the project as well as keep track of the project status
management should participate in the system training at least in the "Reporting Training Session"
